Acting Chief of Police Latroy A. Durrette

Chief Durrette comes with over 30 years of law enforcement experience with the Charlottesville Police Department (CPD).  Extensive operational, administrative and executive command experience.  He has commanded major operations involving world and national dignitaries, as well as large scale events.  Previously serving as the Assistant Chief of Police with the Charlottesville Police Department. 

Various Roles & Accomplishments

During his tenure as a law enforcement professional, he has been responsible for managing the Traffic Unit, SWAT Team, Daylight Patrol, Support Operation Division, Support Operation Bureau and most recently served as the Assistant Chief of Police.

He started with the Charlottesville Police Department as a Police Explorer before being hired as a Community Service Officer (CSO).  After graduating from the police academy at age 20, he was the youngest officer hired in the department and was the 25th Black officer hired in the department's history. 

Chief Durrette was promoted through the ranks of Sergeant and Lieutenant.  As a Lieutenant once again made department history, as he was one of only two black Lieutenants to ever serve the CPD at that time.  As a Lieutenant, Durrette was responsible for the daily operation of daylight shift before being transferred to the Support Operation Division where he led the department's School Resource Unit, Traffic Unit, Hiring and Retention and the Accreditation Unit before being promoted to the rank of Captain landing him as the department first black Bureau Commander.

In 2021 Durrette once again made history becoming the first black Assistant Chief of Police with CPD and serves as Interim Chief of Police.

Education

Chief Durrette attended Piedmont Virginia Community College, is a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute for leadership in changing times in 2012 and the University of Virginia National Criminal Justice Command College in 2014.
