CFD Announces Second Annual Girls Fire and Rescue Camp

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Charlottesville Fire Department is hosting its 2nd annual Girls Fire & Rescue Camp to encourage women to seek career opportunities in the fire service.

The 3-day camp will take place on Monday, July 17 through Wednesday, July 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The camp is free of charge and open to students who are City of Charlottesville residents, rising grades 7 to 12.

The camp's inception began after a recruitment discussion with CFD members on how to bolster diversity within the department. Shortly thereafter, the camp was developed and implemented in 2022. The goal is to encourage women to seek career opportunities in the fire service.

In 2020, CFD only had 3 female Firefighter/EMTs in the department. Since then, CFD has hired 9 women, bringing the total to 12 (a 300% increase). According to the National Fire Protection Agency, out of the estimated 1,041,200 firefighters nationwide, only 9% are female.

During the 3-day camp, young women will learn CPR, train in fire/EMS simulations, and participate in team-building exercises. The camp will provide mentorship, instill confidence, and strengthen leadership skills.
