FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 11, 2020
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - On September 1, 2020, Charlottesville Police Officer Jeffrey Jaeger was charged with assault and battery for conduct associated with his March 3, 2020 detention and arrest of Andre Henderson. Today, Judge Theresa Carter found Mr. Jaeger guilty of assault and battery and sentenced him to 12 months in jail with all of that time suspended. She placed him on two years of unsupervised probation.
Charlottesville Commonwealth’s Attorney Joe Platania, who prosecuted the case, stated that “[T]hose we entrust with a badge and charge with keeping our community safe must reflect the best of us. Unfortunately, that standard was not met in this instance. Our community and our criminal justice system rely on the integrity of police officers and we must hold accountable those who abuse their positions of power and trust. But the acts of one should also not reflect on the ethical and professional conduct of the rest of the committed public servants in the Charlottesville Police Department.”
Mr. Jaeger has appealed his conviction and the matter will be set for trial in Charlottesville Circuit Court. Consistent with past practices and the policy of this office, there will be no further public comment on substantive issues related to this case.
