FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 15, 2020
On December 15, 2020, at approximately 0909 hours, officers responded to the 400 block of Garrett Street after receiving a call for a wanted person in the area. On scene, officers encountered Tayveon Laric Brown, a 20-year-old resident of Charlottesville, who was wanted on multiple warrants, including:
- Brandishing a Firearm (Virginia Code 18.2-282)
- Forgery (Virginia Code 18.2-168)
- Providing a False Identity to Law Enforcement (Virginia Code 19.2-82.1)
- Drunk in Public (Summons)
Brown was also arrested on December 13 for brandishing a firearm at a Charlottesville resident. Brown was released the following day, and while he is considered innocent of those charges until proven guilty, officers were knowledgeable of this previous firearm-related incident when they responded to today’s call.
During today’s encounter Brown refused to cooperate with officers and refused to comply with their commands, specifically refusing to remove his hands from his pockets as he was gesturing as if to indicate he had a firearm in his pocket. In response to the refusal to comply, and believing he was currently armed, an officer deployed multiple less-lethal “bean bag” rounds at Brown. Brown was then taken safely into custody.
Brown was treated for minor injuries and released from UVA Hospital a short time later. He was then transported to ACRJ based on the outstanding warrants.
Brown is presumed innocent until proven guilty after appropriate judicial proceedings. Anyone with information related to this incident is encouraged to contact the Charlottesville Police Department at 434-970-3280.
