FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 17, 2020

The Charlottesville Police Department and Charlottesville Sheriff’s Office are warning the public about a potential phone scam.

The sheriff’s office has received phone calls from residents claiming a caller is identifying themselves as “Lt. Russell” or “Lt. Newberry,” and asking them to call back about an “urgent legal matter.”

CPD and CSO will never call to threaten you with legal proceedings, demand money, or ask for you personal information such as your bank account information or social security number over the phone. If you receive a call like this, hang up the phone immediately.

Residents who receive these types of calls are encouraged to contact our regional Emergency Communication Center’s non-emergency line at (434) 977-9041. An officer will follow-up and the incident will be documented.
