Charlottesville Parks & Recreation Announces Reopening Dates and Details for Facilities and Programs


CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Charlottesville Parks & Recreation is pleased to announce more details for the reopening of its recreational facilities for the next few months.  Parks & Recreation is actively recruiting, hiring and training staff for the reopening and operations of it facilities.

Current Parks & Recreation Programs and Facilities/Amenities Open

  • All City Parks and Trails 
  • All Playgrounds on City or School Property
  • All Outdoor Basketball Courts on City Property  
  • All Picnic Shelters:  Open Daily and Available for Reservations
  • All Tennis Courts:  Open Daily and Available for Reservations
  • Athletic Fields:  Leagues and Instructional Programs are Permitted 
  • Charlottesville Skate Park:  Open Daily
  • City Market:  Open as a Pre-Order and Drive-Thru Pick-Up Model
  • Meadowcreek Golf Course:  Open Daily
  • Recreational Programs:  
    • Outdoor recreational programs as well as virtual group fitness and adaptive programs
    • Softball and volleyball league registration is open
    • Summer camp registration is open for City Residents

 Future Parks & Recreation Programs and Facilities/Amenities Reopening

May 2021

The following facilities will reopen and/or changes in programs will occur in May.  The reopening of facilities are subject to change and contingent on the rehiring of staff to operate the facilities.  

  • May 1:   Skateboarding summer camp registration opens.
  • May 10:  Registration opens for summer programs and summer camps (Non-Residents).
  • May 15:   City Market returns to an in-person shopping experience at the 100 Water Street parking lot in Downtown Charlottesville.   COVID-19 safety rules will apply (see below).
  • May 17:   Carver Recreation Center and Key Recreation Center will reopen.  COVID-19 safety rules will apply (see below).
  • May 24:   Tonsler Recreation Center will reopen.   COVID-19 safety rules will apply (see below).
  • May 29:  Spray Grounds at Belmont Park, Forest Hills Park, Greenleaf Park and Tonsler Park will open for the  season*.
  • May 29:  Crow Indoor Pool and Washington Park Pool will reopen.  COVID-19 safety rules will apply (see below).

*Spray Grounds at Belmont Park, Forest Hills Park, Greenleaf Park and Tonsler Park will open no later than May 29.   

August 2021

  • August 1:   Smith Aquatic & Fitness Center will reopen.  COVID-19 safety rules will apply (see below).

Facilities Remaining Closed 

  • Onesty Family Aquatic Center will remain closed due to staff constraints.  Parks & Recreation is actively working on recruiting and hiring the required staff and hopes to reopen this facility as soon as possible once staffing levels are fulfilled.  

COVID-19 Safety Rules and Procedures

The following rules and procedures will be implemented at the facilities below for the safety of staff and customers.  Please visit www.charlottesville.gov/parksandrec for more information about specific facility hours, reservations, capacities or other COVID-19 information.

Carver Recreation Center, Crow Indoor Pool, Key Recreation Center, Smith Aquatic & Fitness Center, Tonsler Recreation Center and Washington Park Pool

  • Temperature checks and a short questionnaire will be completed by Parks & Recreation staff outside of the building prior to entry.
  • Capacities for each facility/room will be reduced in accordance with Center for Disease Control (CDC) and/or Virginia Department of Health (VDH) guidelines.
  • Reservations will be required for entry to all facilities (except Tonsler).   Reservations can be made online at www.webtrac.charlottesville.gov or by calling the facility you are interested in reserving.  Tonsler Recreation Center will be open for walk-ups but entrance is not guaranteed due to capacity limits.
  • Face coverings:
    • Patrons will be required to wear a face covering when entering/exiting and when traveling between areas within an indoor facility.  
    • Patrons will not be required to wear a face covering when participating in fitness activities, swimming or using fitness equipment.
    • All Parks & Recreation staff will be required to wear a face covering over their mouth and nose at all times.
    • All spectators must wear a face covering over their mouth and nose at all times.
  • Social distancing of at least 10 feet apart will be required when using fitness equipment or swimming.

City Market

  • A perimeter around the parking lot will be setup to create a single entry/exit to control the flow of customers attending the market and capacity will be reduced to control the amount customers that can safely be at the market at one-time.
  • Face coverings will be required for all customers, vendors and staff while at the market.
  • Vendors will be spaced out 10 feet apart.
