Utility relocation work has begun for the Belmont Bridge Replacement project. Monticello Road between Graves Street and Old Avon will now be closed to vehicular travel between 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning on Monday, August 9 until Friday, August 27. Pedestrian access will be maintained as well as access to private parcels.
An underground duct bank for private utilities(electrical and telecommunication) is being constructed and the road closure will help advance the ongoing work. Steel plates will be used to cover completed sections at the end of each weekday. Each Friday, completed sections will be backfilled and patched with temporary pavement.
Construction is being conducted by Caton Construction Group, Inc. for the City of Charlottesville’s Department of Public Works. The contractor is undergrounding electrical as well as telecommunication lines to accommodate the future pedestrian underpass under 9th/Avon Street between South Street and Monticello Road.
