Winter Weather Safety Tips for the Community

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - In anticipation of another winter weather event, the City of Charlottesville and regional Public Safety officials want everyone to stay safe.

Winter storms create a higher risk of car accidents, hypothermia, frostbite, carbon monoxide poisoning, and heart attacks from overexertion.  These hazardous weather events can bring extreme cold, freezing rain, snow, ice, high winds, and can knock out heat, power, and communication services.

Be prepared for winter storms with the following safety tips:

Stay off roads if at all possible.  If you need to travel, allow extra distance between you and other drivers.  Slow down and be patient.  Check road conditions at 511virginia.org.

Limit your time outside.  Wear layers of warm clothing if you need to go outdoors.  Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia and begin treatment right away.

Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.  Only use generators outdoors and away from windows.  Never heat your home with a gas stovetop or oven.

Reduce the risk of a heart attack.  Avoid overexertion when shoveling snow.

Prepare for power outages.  Gather supplies in case you need to stay home for several days without power.  Have extra batteries for radios and flashlights.

Check on neighbors.  Older adults and young children are more at risk in extreme cold.

The Charlottesville-UVA-Albemarle Emergency Operations Center has established a 24-hour hotline with live agents providing updates on warming centers, food and water resources, and how to access necessary resources.  The number for the hotline is: 434-297-8415.
