American Redcross Lifeguarding Classes

This class is for Lifeguard candidates who do not have a current Lifeguard certification or whose certification has expired. This class is a blended learning program requiring time at home to complete online assignments. Upon successful completion of the In-Water Pretest (first day), participants will be provided with the American Red Cross online link to access the online portion. Participants can expect to spend approximately six to eight hours to complete the online portion. ALL ONLINE ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THE FIRST IN-CLASS SESSION. Students successfully completing the course will receive a certification in First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and American Red Cross Lifeguard. PRECOURSE SWIM TEST:
- Swim 300 yards continuously (freestyle and breaststroke)
- Start in the water, swim 20 yards using freestyle and breaststroke, surface dive 7 to 12 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point holding the object with both hands and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, all within one minute and 40 seconds.
- Tread water for two minutes with hands above the water level.
Bring to class: Swimsuit, towel and CPR mask (may be purchased for $15.00). FREE TO ALL PARTICIPANTS.
Once registered IMMEDIATELY [within 72 hours of registration or you will be removed from the class] write an email to aquatics@charlottesville.gov, in the subject write Lifeguard Pretest to schedule your pretest [at least 8 day prior]. An aquatics staff member will get in touch with you to schedule your pretest. Candidates must pass the IN WATER pretest to remain on the roster and enrolled in the class. Failure to show these skills will result in our immediate removal from this certification class. Taking the pretest earlier allows you to have more time to complete your online portion.
