The City of Charlottesville assesses property annually for the purpose of real estate taxation. Code of Virginia Section 58.1-3294 requires property owners to furnish income and expense data for income producing properties.
As required, the City’s assessment is an estimate of fair market value as of January 1 each year, based on property sales for the previous calendar year. We welcome appeals based on issues of factual discrepancies in the property description or features, demonstrable issues of uniformity of value within a neighborhood, or fair market value.
The first step in this process is to file an Assessment Appeal Application, requesting an assessor review. The Assessment Appeal Application Form is available for PDF download.
