Welcome to the Clark/Summit Elementary traffic improvements page, where we outline our efforts to enhance safety and efficiency during student drop-off and pick-up times. Below, you will find visual representations of the changes that will be made on August 23rd 2025. We first piloted a temporary version of the proposed changes below from January 5 - March 31 2025. After this pilot period was complete, the City of Charlottesville, Charlottesville Schools, Charlottesville Police Department, and Charlottesville Fire Department determined that the pilot was a success. Safety for students and families was increased.
One change to the pilot version of the traffic layout will be implemented. The vehicle lane and the bike lane will be adjacent for the permanent traffic pattern. This is to allow the Fire Department the access that they need to use their equipment, in case of an emergency.

Project Notes and Updates:
- Belmont Ave (900-1000 block) will become one way for eastbound vehicle traffic
- Belmont Ave (900-1000 block) will have a bike lane
- Tufton Ave will remain as is and be monitored for any future safety issues
- Castalia Ave will become one way for northbound vehicle traffic
- Parking on both sides of the street will remain
- There will be small physical delineators between the vehicle lane and the bike lane (that vehicles can still drive over in order to get to the parking lane)
- There will be a speed table (aka speed hump) installed on Belmont Ave
- Only the street striping will be installed on Aug 23rd. The lane delineators and speed table will be installed at a later date.
