City Declares Official End of Snowfall; Sidewalk Clearing Required Within 24 Hours

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA –  The City of Charlottesville has declared 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2026, as the official end of snowfall from the recent winter storm. This declaration activates the City’s sidewalk clearing requirements under local ordinance.

Per City Code Section 28-25, owners and occupants of properties that abut or front paved sidewalks are responsible for clearing snow, sleet, and ice from adjacent sidewalks. Sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours of the declared end of snowfall, meaning all sidewalks must be cleared by 7:30 p.m. on Monday, January 26, 2026.

Clearing sidewalks is a critical accessibility and public safety issue, particularly for individuals with disabilities, older adults, parents with strollers, and residents who rely on walking or mobility devices. Clear sidewalks are also essential to maintaining Safe Routes to School, which supports efforts to reopen schools safely following winter weather events.

Residents who are able are encouraged to assist neighbors who may need help clearing sidewalks, especially older adults or those with limited mobility.

Reminder: Snow Must Not Be Pushed Into Streets or Onto Sidewalks

The City also reminds residents and private snow removal contractors that it is unlawful to deposit snow into public streets or onto sidewalks.

Under City Code Section 28-26, no person or private plow operator may push, pile, or deposit snow or ice into the public right-of-way, including roadways and sidewalks. Snow placed into streets or sidewalks creates hazardous conditions, interferes with plowing operations, and can impede emergency response and pedestrian access.

This requirement applies to everyone, including residents clearing driveways and private contractors providing snow removal services.

The City appreciates the cooperation of residents, businesses, and contractors as crews continue snow and ice response efforts. Working together to keep sidewalks and streets clear helps protect accessibility, improve safety, and speed the community’s recovery from winter weather.
