Youth Opportunity Coordinator Launches Dynamic Literacy and Leadership Initiatives for Local Youth
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The City of Charlottesville Youth Opportunity Coordinator is proud to announce an exciting series of initiatives designed to empower, engage, and inspire young people across our community. Through a comprehensive approach focused on literacy, leadership, employment readiness, and social engagement, these programs aim to create meaningful opportunities for elementary, pre-teen, and teen youth.
Literacy Initiative: Elementary School Book Clubs
At the heart of the initiative is a renewed commitment to literacy through Elementary School Book Clubs, We Lit(literature) book club. These clubs are designed to foster a love of reading, strengthen comprehension skills, encourage creative thinking in a fun, supportive environment and community. Students will participate in guided discussions and interactive literacy activities that build confidence and academic success.
Early literacy is foundational to lifelong achievement. “Our book clubs create a space where reading becomes both empowering and enjoyable.”
Community Social Events for Pre-Teens & Teens
Recognizing the importance of safe and engaging social spaces, the Youth Opportunity Office will host a series of community-based social events tailored specifically for pre-teens and teens. Through community partnerships we aim to create sustainable events tailored towards youth interest. These events will provide structured recreational activities, team-building experiences, and positive peer interaction in a welcoming environment.
From themed socials to skill-building workshops, these gatherings are designed to strengthen community connections while promoting personal growth and confidence.
Youth Council: Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders
The rebuilding of Youth Council will give young people a direct voice in shaping programs and initiatives that impact their lives. Council members will gain leadership training, civic engagement experience, and opportunities to collaborate with local officials and community partners.
By elevating youth voices, the program fosters responsibility, advocacy skills, and real-world leadership development.
Teen Expo: Employment & Activities Showcase
This first Teen Expo taking place on Friday, March 20 from 12:00 - 2:30 PM at Carver Recreation Center (233 4th St NW, Charlottesville, VA 22903). This expo will serve as a hub for employment opportunities, volunteer programs, internships, and extracurricular activities centered around teens. Local businesses, community organizations, and educational partners will come together to connect youth with summer jobs, career pathways, mentorship programs, and enrichment activities.
The Teen Expo is designed to bridge the gap between teens and opportunity, providing the tools, resources, and connections needed for future success.
These initiatives reflect a shared commitment to building a community where every young person has access to literacy support, leadership development, meaningful employment opportunities, and safe social engagement.
