Assistant chief Steve Knick

Captain “Steve” Knick currently serves as the commander of the Administrative Division. He began his career with the Charlottesville Police Department in 2001.

Before his promotion to Sergeant in 2009, Captain Knick served as a bicycle patrol officer, evidence technician/arson investigator, field training officer and instructor. As a Sergeant, he spent most of his time supervising the Crime Prevention Unit in which he helped to grow several CPD community events. Promoted to Lieutenant in 2016, he has overseen various units and bureaus such as Administrative Services,  Logistics, Patrol and most recently before his promotion, Special Operations.  

Captain Knick is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1996 – 2000. He obtained his Associates Degree from Piedmont VA. Community College while working as a Patrol Officer and graduated from the Institute of Law Enforcement Administration’s School of Executive Leadership in 2015. 

Along with his various roles within the department, Knick also sits on the L.E.T.R. of Special Olympics VA State Executive Council and is a strong supporter of our area athletes of SOVA.
