The City of Charlottesville supports workforce diversity, and all qualified applicants receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, genetic information, political affiliation, veteran status or disability. The City of Charlottesville is a proud Virginia Values Veterans (V3)-certified organization.
The City of Charlottesville’s application and selection process includes the following steps. Please note that this list is not exhaustive and the steps are subject to change.
New positions are regularly posted on the City’s Job Board. Please check each Job Posting for its specific closing date. Jobs close at 5 p.m. Eastern Time on the listed closing date, and all applications must be completed and submitted by that time.
Positions listed as “Continuous” will remain on the job board until filled. To be considered for these roles, submit your application as soon as possible, as they are evaluated, and interviews are conducted on an ongoing basis. Applications may no longer be accepted once a candidate has been selected. The job announcement will be removed once the position is filled and may close at any time.
To receive notifications about new job openings in your areas of interest, you can submit a Job Interest Card to get email alerts for new postings.
Interested job seekers must submit an application online through the City's Employment Page, which is powered by GovernmentJobs.com.
To create an account and or to submit an online application, please visit the Online Employment Application Guide for step-by-step instructions. There is also a virtual agent available to assist you with common questions.
Please note that as part of the application process, you must do all of the following:
You will receive an email stating your application has been received. You can then follow the status of jobs you've applied for by checking Application Status in your account.
For further assistance, you can reach the Government Jobs Applicant Support team via email at support@governmentjobs.com or by phone at 855-524-5627, Monday through Friday, from 6am to 5pm PST.
After the job announcement has closed, applications and supplemental attachments (i.e., resumes, cover letters, and or other supporting information) are referred to the hiring managers and reviewed against the job’s qualifications and requirements – based on the information in the job announcement – to determine which applications will be moved forward in the process.
For job announcements with a closing date listed as “continuous,” applications are received and referred to the Department’s Hiring Manager(s) to be evaluated against the job’s qualifications and requirements – based on the information in the job announcement – on a continuous basis. Applications may no longer be considered once a candidate to fill the position is identified. This job announcement will close when the position(s) have been filled and may close at any time.
The hiring department will determine which applicants from the Referred List will be interviewed. Not every applicant will be selected for an interview. The department will contact candidates to arrange interviews in coordination with the leadership teams of the respective departments.
If you are selected for an interview, the hiring manager will contact you directly via phone or email to schedule it. Some positions may require just one round of interviews, while others may involve several rounds. Interviews may be conducted by phone, video, in person, or a combination of these methods.
The City’s Structured interviews are typically conducted by a panel of three or more people and generally feature questions formatted as Behavioral Based Interview Questions.
Once interviews are completed, the hiring manager will contact their selected candidate to extend an employment offer for the position. All employment offers are contingent upon negative test results from a pre-employment drug screening, and satisfactory results from a criminal background check and reference checks and depending on the position may also require satisfactory results from a DMV records check*.
All interviewed applicants who were not selected to move forward in the process are notified—by email or letter—of the outcome of the selection process.
*DMV records check and meeting the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicle driver’s license requirement is only needed if the position requires driving and or the operation of a City vehicle. To view the City’s driving eligibility requirements, visit https://www.charlottesville.gov/faq.aspx?qid=166.
Please note that reference checks may be required to be completed prior to the employment offer being extended.
Prior to being given a start date and reporting to their first day of work, all new employees will need to complete the following:
It's important to note that the City's policy regarding drug screening remains unchanged despite the decriminalization of marijuana in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As marijuana remains illegal drug under federal law, the City of Charlottesville maintains a drug-free and alcohol-free workplace. Final candidates for employment must successfully clear a pre-employment drug screening in accordance with position requirements.
