Accepting Lateral Firefighter/EMTs
Firefighters who are currently certified at the firefighter level I (IFSAC or ProBoard) and Medics (NREMT or Commonwealth of Virginia) currently employed at a career fire department with 12 months of experience will be considered lateral firefighters. Lateral firefighters will participate in the orientation process instead of a full academy upon hire. Out-of-state hires will need to seek reciprocity for state certifications.
FIRE & EMS RESPONSE
The Fire & Emergency Medical Response program deploys from three static locations across the city. These three fire stations house full-time city firefighter/EMTs 24 hours a day. All firefighter/EMTs are trained as emergency medical technicians, and some are also paramedics. Additionally, personnel work toward specialized training in HazMat, ladder truck operations, pump operations, confined space, water rescue, and more.
