Department Policies

The Charlottesville Police Department is committed to transparency and maintaining the public’s trust and confidence. That trust and confidence is earned through our steadfast commitment to holding our members and our organization to the highest ethical and professional standards.

The Department’s Policy Manual sets forth the general responsibilities, rules, regulations, policies and procedures, and standards of conduct expected of all its members which are necessary for the professional operation of our agency in the delivery of its police services.

The Policy Manual is periodically updated and amended to reflect changes in law, nationwide best practices, and standards of accreditation. It should be noted that the linked Policy Manual is not all encompassing and, in some instances, entire policies or portions thereof have been omitted or redacted but only to the extent they contain tactical information or law-enforcement investigative techniques and procedures, the disclosure of which would jeopardize the safety or security of law-enforcement personnel and/or the general public and then only as permitted under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.

Questions or inquiries regarding any of the policies and/or procedures contained within our Policy Manual should be directed to the Professional Standards Division at: (434) 970-3600.
