Council meetings are televised live on Charlottesville’s Own TV10 and may also be viewed on-demand. Meetings are also live streamed on the City's Facebook page. Visit our streaming pages for video of recent meetings.  Electronic participation (viewing) for meetings is available by registering in advance for the Zoom webinar at www.charlottesville.gov/zoom.

Public Comment

Time is open near the beginning of each regular meeting for up to sixteen speakers on subjects not scheduled for a public hearing. Visit our "Request to Speak" sign-up page to request a time in advance (first eight spaces chosen by lottery). Additional time is open for speakers at the end of the meeting. All speakers are asked to state their name and locality of residence, and remarks are limited to three minutes. Requests to speak should be sent no earlier than two weeks prior to the meeting, and will be accepted beginning the morning following a regular Council meeting. Public comments are accepted in-person at designated times during the meeting. Comments regarding public hearing items should be reserved for the public hearing.

Proclamations

Proclamations are administered at the discretion of the mayor. Some may be issued on behalf of City Council, while the mayor reserves discretion to issue the proclamations directly from the mayor.

Requests for proclamation recognition should be emailed to the Clerk of Council and the mayor for consideration, preferrable one month in advance of the desired recognition. In general,  requests should be for milestone recognition and locally relevant notices or announcements. Requests should include:

  • 5-6 facts relevant to the facts (These will be used to develop WHEREAS statements.)
  • Data relevant to the City of Charlottesville. (Some national recognitions may be supported by a local proclamation, given locally relevant data. Certain national recognitions change themes annually, and may be considered on an annual basis locally.)
  • Desired date for recognition
  • Name of person who will pick up the proclamation from City Hall, or name of person(s) who will receive the proclamation at a City Council meeting

We encourage providing a sample proclamation when making the request, if possible.

Staff or the mayor will notify requestors of the decision.
