Youth Opportunity Coordination
The position of Youth Opportunity Coordinator (YOC) is designed to identify and direct children, youth, and young adults toward tailored services that address specific goals related to closing the achievement gap and promote long-term success. Activities of the YOC include but are not limited to:
- Identifies, provides access, and directly supports services that help children cognitively, physically, socially, and emotionally.
- Offers consultation and coordination to community programs and resources.
- Formulates annual local goals for youth based on the strategic goals developed nationally by organizations such as Cities United and My Brother's Keeper to measure systemic change.
- Stays informed on best practices and research, to support the achievement of children, youth, and young adults, particularly those who are underserved and fall within the achievement gap.
- Serves as a planning committee member on the Charlottesville Area Network Dedicated to Youth Development (CANDYD).
- Provides direct oversight, management, and support to the Charlottesville Youth Council which includes but is not limited to recruitment of youth participants, facilitating monthly meetings, organizing learning opportunities, and presenting to City Council annually.
YOUTH COUNCIL
Youth Council is a board of 15 participants appointed by City Council and serve as advisors to City Council. During the school-year, Youth Council research and advocate around issues facing youth in our community. The year concludes with a presentation to City Council.
Membership should represent the following:
At least (2) middle school students, (2) students from each grade level at Charlottesville High School (Attendance zones: Burnley-Moran, Clark, Greenbrier, Jackson-Via, Johnson, Venable), (1) student from the Lugo-McGinness Academy and (5) At-large members who attend a private school or homeschool that is located within the City of Charlottesville or are an out-of-district CCS student.
