Since 1956, with the adoption of the City’s first historic district at Court Square, our community has been committed to cultural resources and public history. That commitment has been reforged with each generation:
1970’s - The Landmarks Commission & Ordinance adoptions
1980’s - Addition of Historic Preservation into the Comprehensive Plan
1990’s - Cultural resource planning, education, and the founding of the HRC
Early 21st c.- Blue Ribbon Commission on Race, Memorials and Public Spaces
2020’s – City’s historical and cultural fabric recognized in the Comprehensive Plan

On March 3, 2025 the city unveiled a new state historical marker at Court Square. Charlottesville’s Historic Resource Committee applied to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources for the marker, having both corroborated the necessary research and drafting the approved text.
