Historic Districts & Design Review

The City of Charlottesville’s historic design control designations are intended to promote the preservation of structures and areas with unique historic and architectural significance. These designations also encourage the construction of new structures that are complementary to those resources.

Within each district, design review is required for exterior alterations, new construction, additions, site modification, and demolitions. Projects are reviewed and approvals granted by a Certificate of Appropriateness (CoA), indicating the project is consistent with the established design guidelines.
