Late Payments
Real estate taxes not received or postmarked by the deadline are assessed on the first day after the deadline with a penalty of 10% of the tax due. Taxes remaining unpaid on the first day of the month following the deadline accrue interest on a monthly basis at a rate of 10% per annum.
If a penalty has been applied to your account and you have reason to believe that the penalty should be waived, please first review the Late Payment Penalty Policy (PDF) to learn of the reasons for which a penalty may be waived and then write a letter addressed to the Treasurer presenting your case, attach any supporting documentation and mail it to:
Jason A. Vandever, Treasurer
P. O. Box 2854
Charlottesville, VA 22902
Payment Arrangements
If you are unable to pay your taxes in full by the specified deadline due to financial difficulties, you may make payment arrangements with the Treasurer’s Office. Please call the Treasurer’s Office at 434-970-3146 to set up an arrangement. Making a payment arrangement does not prevent late payment penalties and interest from being applied to your account.
Unpaid Taxes
Unpaid taxes for which no alternative arrangements have been made or for which arrangements have been made but not met will be subject to collections procedures including, but not limited to bank account liens, rent liens, and wage garnishments. Properties that have accumulated three or more years of unpaid tax are subject to judicial sale. Once eligible, properties are referred to Jonathan Wren, who handles the judicial sale process for the City. Please visit https://taxva.com/real-estate-tax-sales/ for more information about upcoming judicial sales.
Tax Relief and Homeowner Grants
The City of Charlottesville offers several tax relief and homeowner assistance grants for Charlottesville residents. Please visit the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Tax Relief page for more information.
