CPD Investigates Shooting, Arrest Made
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — At approximately 1:40 a.m. this morning, officers patrolling on foot along the Downtown Mall heard multiple gunshots near Fitzroy. Officers immediately responded and located a 30-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. They rendered emergency aid and applied a tourniquet until medics arrived. The victim was transported to UVA Medical Center and is expected to recover.
Detectives and members of our Forensics Unit responded to the scene and initiated an investigation. As a result of their investigation Mr. Lorenzo McAllister, 34 years old, was identified and taken into custody. A second suspect, who is also believed to be involved, is currently being sought. Mr. McAllister has been charged with:
- Reckless handling of a firearm
- Possession of a concealed firearm
- Discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school
Preliminary information suggests the incident may have begun inside Fitzroy and continued outside, where the shooting occurred.
This is the second shooting on the Downtown Mall in the past week. In response to this trend, the Police Department has increased our presence in the area, including deploying multiple officers on foot patrol during peak hours. We are also actively coordinating with state partners, including the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority (ABC), as both recent incidents occurred at or near licensed establishments.
If anyone has information related to this incident, please contact Crime Stoppers at (434) 977-4000.
