UPDATE: Pedestrian Fatally Struck in Traffic Incident on Emmet Street

In consultation with the Charlottesville Commonwealth’s Attorney, charges have been filed against the driver involved in the recent fatal pedestrian accident.

The driver, identified as 20-year-old Henrico County resident, Eleanor Cribbs, has been charged with reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle while using a handheld device

The victim has been identified as 67-year-old Charlottesville resident James Leroy Jones.

Ms. Cribbs is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Pedestrian Fatally Struck in Traffic Incident on Emmet Street


CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - On Wednesday, October 1 at approximately 9:29 p.m., Charlottesville Police and Fire responded to the 1700 block of Emmet Street North following a report of a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.

Upon arrival, officers located a 67-year-old male pedestrian who was pronounced deceased at the scene. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Members of the Charlottesville Police Department’s (CPD) Traffic Unit and General Investigations Bureau responded and are actively investigating the incident in coordination with the Charlottesville Commonwealth Attorney's Office.

This investigation is ongoing; CPD will share additional information as it becomes available.
