Two Arrested in Shooting of 17-Year-Old on Prospect Avenue



CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - CPD detectives have arrested two juvenile individuals, a 16-year-old and 17-year-old, in relation to a shooting that occurred on January 19, 2026, in the 700 block of Prospect Ave. 

Original Release, January 20, 2026:

On January 19th, 2026, at approximately 7:30PM, CPD responded to the 700 block of Prospect Ave for the report of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers located a 17-year-old male Charlottesville resident suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

It is believed that multiple suspects who may have been involved in the incident fled the area in a silver or light-colored SUV.

UPDATE, January 29, 2026:

As a result of the investigation, CPD detectives have arrested two juvenile individuals, a 16-year-old and 17-year-old, with the following:

16-Year-Old Juvenile

  • 18.2-308.7 – Possession of Firearm by Person <18Y
  • 18.2-51.2(A) – Aggravated Malicious Wounding
  • 18.2-279 – Maliciously Shoot Into Occupied Dwelling
  • 18.2-422 – Wear Mask To Conceal Identity

17-Year-Old Juvenile

  • 18.2-51 – Malicious Wounding
  • 18.2-279 – Maliciously Shoot Into Occupied Dwelling
  • 18.2-19 – Accessory After Fact in Felony

This is still an active investigation and further charges may arise.

“This investigation reflects the relentless and thorough work of our detectives, who moved quickly and carefully to identify those responsible and bring this case forward,” said Chief Michael Kochis. “At the same time, it is deeply troubling and saddening that everyone involved in this incident is so young.“

Both juveniles are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
