CPD Reports 51% Reduction in Gun-Related Incidents in 2025
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Charlottesville Police Department (CPD) today released its 2025 Snapshot, highlighting significant reductions in crime and notable progress in community safety and response efforts.
Most notably, gun-related incidents decreased by 51% from 2024 to 2025, marking one of the most substantial public safety improvements in recent years.
Overall crime declined by 10.9% when including larcenies and 17.8% when excluding larcenies, underscoring sustained reductions across multiple crime categories. These outcomes reflect a continued focus on prevention, strategic enforcement, and collaborative community partnerships.
“Reducing gun violence remains one of our highest priorities,” said Chief Kochis. “A 51% reduction in gun-related incidents represents real lives impacted and real harm prevented. This progress is the result of our dedicated staff, strong partnerships with our community, and data-driven strategies that focus on both accountability and prevention.”
The 2025 Snapshot also highlights CPD’s ongoing commitment to community-centered policing and co-response initiatives. In 2025, CPD handled 48,959 calls for service, with less than 0.22% involving any use of force. Co-response data shows that more than half of co-response calls (52.7%) involved mental health-related incidents, reinforcing the importance of alternative response models and partnerships with behavioral health professionals.
In addition, CPD continues to make progress in building a diverse and representative workforce. Currently, 23% of CPD officers are female, 19% are Black, and 7% are Hispanic, reflecting ongoing efforts to recruit and retain officers who reflect the community they serve.
“These statistics show that effective policing is about more than enforcement alone,” Chief Kochis added. “It’s about trust, professionalism, and meeting people where they are. We will continue to build on this momentum to keep our community safe and supported.”
The full CPD 2025 Snapshot is available on the department’s website and social media platforms.
